Your Opportunity

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of Foresight’s backend systems, with a focus on data architecture and portfolio reporting capabilities. Working closely with the Director of Engineering, Product, and other engineering partners, you will help build scalable, reliable backend services that support accurate, high-performance reporting for private equity and venture capital clients.

This role sits at the intersection of data, systems, and product, contributing hands-on backend development while providing technical guidance and mentorship within the engineering team. Generative AI is a key component of our technology stack, and you will lead the construction of industry leading agentic AI workflows and user experiences. Operating in a fast-growing startup environment, you will gain exposure to the workflows, data complexity, and decision-making processes that underpin the private markets ecosystem.

This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is based in the New York City metro area, operating on a hybrid schedule, requiring 2–3 days per week onsite (Tribeca). Travel is not expected at this time.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to scope backend features, contribute to clear technical requirements, and support delivery through agile development cycles.

• Design, build, and maintain backend services that support portfolio reporting, analytics, and data-driven workflows.

• Integrate data from multiple internal and external sources, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and performance of reporting systems.

• Collaborate with Engineering team to design and implement features that leverage data enrichment, machine learning, and AI capabilities.

• Contribute to backend architecture and data model decisions in alignment with established technical direction.

• Work closely with frontend and data teams to deliver end-to-end product functionality.

• Support monitoring and improvement of system-level metrics, including performance, data integrity, and reliability.

• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and day-to-day technical guidance.

• Operate effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with evolving priorities and requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelors degree in computer science or related field; commensurate years of experience in lieu of degree.

• Minimum of 6 years of professional backend or full-stack engineering experience, with ownership of complex frontend features or systems.

• Demonstrated experience writing scalable, maintainable code in JavaScript or TypeScript, with a backend focus.

• Experience building and integrating web services and APIs, including REST and/or GraphQL, HTTP, and JSON.

• Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.

• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies (Scrum or similar).

• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with product, frontend, and data partners.

Preferred:

• Experience working in an entrepreneurial or early-stage environment, comfortable operating within a small team.

• Familiarity with financial data, analytics, or investment-related calculations (VC, PE, or B2B SaaS).

• Experience using AI in day-to-day workflow to increase development efficiency.
