Your Opportunity
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will contribute hands-on to the design and development of Foresight’s backend systems, with a focus on data integration and portfolio reporting capabilities. Generative AI is a key component of our technology stack, and you will help build industry leading agentic AI workflows and user experiences. Working closely with the Director of Engineering, Product, and other engineering partners, you will help build reliable backend services that support accurate, high-performance reporting for private equity and venture capital clients.
This role is well suited for an engineer who enjoys building core backend functionality, working with complex data, and growing their technical scope within a fast-moving startup environment. You will gain exposure to the workflows, data challenges, and decision-making processes that underpin the private markets ecosystem, while continuing to develop depth in backend systems, cloud-based architectures, and generative AI-powered agents.
This position reports to the Director of Engineering and is based in the New York City metro area, operating on a hybrid schedule, requiring 2–3 days per week onsite (Tribeca). Travel is not expected at this time.
Responsibilities
- Implement backend features and services in support of portfolio reporting, analytics, and data ingestion workflows.
- Work from defined technical requirements to deliver well-tested, maintainable backend code.
- Build and maintain APIs and backend logic that support frontend applications and internal data use cases.
- Integrate internal and third-party data sources, helping ensure correctness and consistency of data flowing through the platform.
- Collaborate with frontend and data engineers to deliver complete product features.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve backend issues across development and production environments.
- Contribute to improving code quality through testing, documentation, and participation in code reviews.
- Follow established architectural patterns and engineering best practices while developing an understanding of broader system design.
- Operate effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with evolving priorities and timelines.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or related field; commensurate years of experience in lieu of degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional backend or full-stack engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience writing scalable, maintainable code in JavaScript or TypeScript, with a backend focus.
- Experience building and integrating web services and APIs, including REST and/or GraphQL, HTTP, and JSON.
- Experience working with cloud-based environments such as AWS or Azure.
- Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies (Scrum or similar).
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with product, frontend, and data partners.
Preferred:
- Experience working in an entrepreneurial or early-stage environment, comfortable operating within a small team.
- Familiarity with financial data, analytics, or investment-related calculations (VC, PE, or B2B SaaS).
- Experience using AI in day-to-day workflow to increase development efficiency.
